I grew up in Brattleboro, Vermont, around small family farms, artists, and a community of people who have either been farming the same land for generations, or have been attracted to southern Vermont more recently for it’s progressive ideals, international graduate school, and value of community. After living in various other states and abroad for a number of years, I returned to Brattleboro around five years ago, and have been thrilled to become part of a community that is focused on rebuilding the roots that make a community thrive. In the summer, I am able to buy a majority of my food and other products from local farms and crafters, and many of the services I use come from self-employed contractors who take pride in their trade.
A few years ago, I started creating and selling one-of-a-kind handcrafted jewelry at our local farmer’s market. My business has now grown to include my passion for creating pure herbal medicines and body care products from sustainably grown and fairly traded ingredients. I started off by creating products for myself so I would know the quality of the ingredients I was using and how they were made. I was conscious of the source of my ingredients, making sure they were bought at a fair price from the communities that grow and harvest them. Then through the Brattleboro Farmer’s Market, I began selling my body butters in addition to my handcrafted jewelry. The response to the quality of my products was fantastic. Mixing recipes from socially and environmentally conscious ingredients has allowed me to become a part of an international chain of community building and support that I really value.
My newest adventure is to branch out from my local farmer's market and studio gallery to create a webstore which allows me not only to sell my own products and make them more widely available, but to more directly support my local and international community members by selling some of their quality products as well. On this website I sell amazing products made or imported by friends, as well as share some great small companies and organizations from around the world by providing information and links to their websites.
Inspired by a desire to provide more in depth background information about the ingredients I use in my body care products, as well as articles and resources about holistic health and progressive social & environmental organizations, I have now created a Newsletter. This opens the door of Stone of Wisdom further, to include my passion for community organizing and social activism and provides a way to network with other people around the world.
